In his 1856 book entitled The Grammar of Ornament, Owen Jones produced a chapter on the ornamentation of the ancient Assyrians and Persians. The fact that he placed this particular design style at chapter three, sandwiched between that of Egyptian decoration and Greek, says much about where Jones saw these two particular cultures in the grand history of decoration.
Jones made the assumption that Assyrian art and design work was somewhere between a copy and a degeneration of the Egyptian original. The fact that it didn't occur to him that the two styles were independent and bore no real relationship to each other, can be partly explained by an examination of the early days of Victorian archaeology and their misreading and misunderstanding of the often complex relationship of the many different ancient cultures that made up the Middle East at that period.

Das 1600 Jahre alte syrisch-orthodoxe Kloster Mor Gabriel im Südosten der Türkei ist von der Enteignung bedroht: trotz einwandfreien Besitzurkunden machen die türkische Regierung, sowie die umliegenden kurdischen Dörfer und Grossgrundbesitzer seit Monaten den Christen in mehreren Gerichtsprozessen das Land streitig.
Das Christentum wurde höchstwahrscheinlich bereits von den Aposteln Judas Thaddäus und Thomas nach der Kreuzigung Jesu in den Bergen des Tur Abdin verkündet, aus dem Jahr 120 ist ein Bischof bekannt. Ab dem 4. Jahrhundert entstanden ungefähr 80 Klöster und es wuchs ein zutiefst christlich geprägtes Volk heran, das bis heute Aramäisch spricht und mehrfach Verfolgungen ausgesetzt war. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts lebten noch 300.000 Gläubige im Südosten der Türkei, nach mehreren Massakern durch die türkisch/ osmanische Armee und kurdische Banden im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert, floh der Grossteil der überlebenden Christen ins Ausland. Für die rund 3000 Aramäer, die heute noch in den Bergen des Tur Abdin leben, wäre die Schliessung des Klosters Mor Gabriel, das das religiöse und soziale Zentrum der Erzdiözese Tur Abdin ist, das Ende ihrer christlichen Glaubensgemeinschaft in einem Land, in dem 99% der Bevölkerung Muslime sind.

At least five people have been killed in a series of bomb attacks near the Iraqi capital as the country prepares to celebrate the Muslim holiday, Eid al-Adha.
Two homemade bombs exploded in a crowded market in Mussayib, 60km south of Baghdad, at 11am local time (08:00 GMT) on Thursday, killing two people and wounding 28 others, including women and children. In a separate incident, a car bomb went off at a taxi and a bus station in Yusufiya, also south of Baghdad, killing one man and injuring 10 others, police said.

Denn Shemal Marcus ist chaldäischer Christ und damit in der muslimischen Welt ein Exot. Heute wohnt er im friedlichen Odenkirchen und arbeitet als Diakon für die chaldäische Kirchengemeinde. Er ist nur einer von schätzungsweise 1200 Menschen chaldäischen Glaubens, die in Mönchengladbach zu Hause sind. Die meisten von ihnen stammen aus dem Irak. Viele sind in den vergangenen Jahren in die Stadt gezogen – als Flüchtlinge, die im Pulverfass des kriegsgeschundenen Landes um ihre Existenz gefürchtet hatten.

Högt uppsatta turkiska officerare hade gjort långtgående planer på att terrorisera icke-muslimer i Turkiet. I den stora Ergenekon*-härvan har nyligen en välplanerad terroroperation avslöjats. Operationen som kallas "Kafes Operasyonu Eylem Planı", på svenska "verkställandet av bur - operationen", gick ut på att utrota den kvarvarande lilla skara kristna som lever i Turkiet idag.
Planen avslöjades när polisen grep Levent Bektas, en major i den turkiska armén. Bevismaterialet som har beslagtagits avslöjar mer än 27 officerare och högt uppsatta militärer som är inblandade i komplotten mot de kristna. För att kartlägga kristna nyckelpersoner och sedan mörda dessa har terrornätverket gjort inbrott hos och stulit datorer från en grekisk församlingsförening. Syftet med det var att komma åt församlingens medlemslistor.

Iraq's national museum to lure 'virtual visitors' Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- It houses some of ancient Mesopotamia's rarest artifacts, but what is even harder to find at Iraq's National Museum are visitors. So the museum has teamed up with Google and the U.S. government to create a "virtual museum" that will allow anyone with access to a computer to view its collections.
"Mesopotamia is the world's oldest civilization and there's no shortage of archaeological institutions in the United States and around the world, as well as curious individuals, as well as museum curators around the world who'd be interested in getting a chance to visit the museum," explained U.S. State Department official Jared Cohen. Cohen spoke Tuesday shortly before an announcement by Google CEO Eric Schmidt and other U.S. officials that the online museum will be up and running by early next year.

FOWLER Federal Labor MP Julia Irwin has spoken out against plans for an Assyrian war monument in Bonnyrigg.
In a speech in parliament on Monday night, Ms Irwin said the monument would cause division in the community. “There are great difficulties in supporting memorials on public land which are dedicated to one cultural or ethnic group, no matter how worthy or noble the cause,” she said.

Robert DeKelaita, one of the founders of the Ashurbanipal Library of Chicago, is pushing the arts as a way to bring people together, after various political and religious internal conflicts have brought division and bitterness between members of the community. He is supported by Assyrian attorneys, doctors, and other activists.

Redan som 15-åring spelade han i division 3 och sedan blev det fotbollsgymnasiet i Västerås. Därefter spelade han tre säsonger i Assyriska, Södertälje där han var med och förde upp laget från division 4 till 2. Det blev även ett 10-tal matcher där innan en skada satte stopp för den egna fotbollskarriären.
